Advisor Conflict & LGBTQ+ Mentorship

Meet this week's Grad Chat guest, Abby Nissenbaum (she/her).

Promotional Graphic, text reads Advisor Conflict and LGBTQ+ mentorship, Grad Chat by PhD Balance. There are two headshots one of Niba, the host & one of Abby, the guest.

Abby Nissenbaum (she/her) is currently an MBA candidate and a data analyst in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a former PhD student in Social Psychology who received retaliation after refusing to falsify data as requested by her advisor.

Abby has also served as the LGBTQ Mentorship Program Coordinator for the American Psychological Association Grad Students' Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. She has been especially outspoken about #MeToo and wants to raise awareness about how retaliation in academia uniquely affects LGBTQ scientists who speak out about unethical research practices.

In addition to her activist work, Abby is a talented musician and singer who is currently working with producer Riley Geare (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra) on a music release and a forthcoming EP, centred on themes of harassment and abuse in academia, as well as mental health consequences.
