WHAT IS PHD BALANCE?

PhD Balance is a new project, designed for and by graduate students.

Our mission? To empower students to grow their own resilience and work towards success in and after their graduate training.

We need a new space to create resources and connect with others; a space where people can choose to be anonymous and feel more safe.

PhD Balance will be that space.

We will offer resources from webinars to monthly challenges, from worksheets to guides on talking with advisers. We will host conversation forums to discuss common, or uncommon, adversity and hurdles.

Our Beginnings: The PhDepression

We started with the goal of creating a collaborative community to discuss mental health in graduate school. From the beginning, we have focused on providing support, starting the conversation, and showing the faces of academics to increase visibility and awareness.

Did you know almost half of PhD and graduate students struggle to maintain their mental health?

A 2018 Nature Biotechnology online survey found that PhD candidates showed symptoms of:

moderate to severe anxiety

41%
moderate to severe depression

39%

This invisible population suffers from anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. The mental health epidemic in Higher Education reduces productivity and creativity in research, slowing progress and weakening the community.

Support the Conversation

Do you have a story you are happy to share?  #tellyourstory – we are on the hunt for personal experiences of mental heath issues in academia, however that looked for you.
