Hi friends!

My name is Chrissy Stachl (she/her/ella, @chrissystachl) and I am so excited to be hanging out with you all today and tomorrow!!

I finished my PhD in Chemistry last Fall, and am now the Director of Education, Outreach, and Diversity at the Center for Genetically Encoded Materials. I spent the last few years of my PhD working to understand sense of belonging in graduate students, postdocs and faculty, and finding ways to help departments improve the overall grad student experience. I am absolutely thrilled to get to share some of what I’ve learned, and my own experiences around feeling a sense of belonging!

More about me: I started my PhD in physical chemistry, as one of only a few Latinx students in my department of >400 graduate students. My experiences during the first two years of my program motivated me to find ways to diversity my department and make it more inclusive. After launching a longitudinal study of my department’s academic climate, I switched into a chemistry education group and spent the rest of my PhD studying sense of belonging and the role it plays within academic culture.

Thank you all for tuning into this week's Grad Chat, I'm excited to talk with you all!!
